natural dyeing

Description

Natural Dyeing. Students will learn the basics of natural dyeing using natural dye extracts, preparation of fabrics, the correct use of mordants and methods of modifying those colours to achieve a whole rainbow of samples thus debunking the myth that natural dyes produce only muddy or insipid results which do not last. Students will be encouraged to start a dye book to record their results which in turn will provide them with a reference which can be used and added to after the workshop has ended.

Dates, please take careful note

Wednesday 15 Feb and Thursday 16 Feb, from 10.00am – 4.00pm

Information

Natural Dyeing is a two day workshop, and the typical days are as follows:

Day 1       Using only 3 different dyes, namely indigo, weld and brazilwood, learn how, with overdyeing and modify a whole spectrum of colour. instruction will be given on mordanting, preparation of basic fructose indigo vat and preparation of the dye extracts and methods of use. While we will be working on cotton, information will be given on how to work with other fibres.

Day 2     A selection of other dye extracts will be made available to work with in a similar manner. It is hoped that there will also be an opportunity for students to have a play with the dyes with larger pieces of fabric and simple resist techniques to put what has been learned into practice.
