Drawing with Stitch, Personal Development is a 6 monthly session course which aims to take a critical and discursive view of textiles as an art form. Students will need to bring an image or series of potential images or objects to work from (though this may develop over time). We will work with the idea of ‘stitch drawing’ as a starting point for discussion and exploring ideas.
We will begin by preparing grounds, using dye and simple techniques for colouring cloth with the aim of creating a palette of fabrics to work with. Drawing exercises will help to develop ideas and imagery, and over the weeks we will focus on the ways that an image might be translated using stitch, collage with cloth and the addition of other materials, working in series to really dig down into the nature of both cloth and image. You will aim to make around 5 small pieces that challenge and develop your personal language.
Over the weeks students will continue to experiment outside the sessions and we will make time at each meeting to discuss work as a group. Talks and contextual discussion will also be part of this process.
Dates, please take careful note
Dates for the course are as follows 16/07/24, 13/8/24, 17/9/24, 15/10/24, 12/11/24, 17/12/24
