Description
Impressionist Inspiration in Textiles
DAY 1:
We will start by studying examples of Pointillism and Impressionism, particularly Monet’s Haystack series and Waterlilies.
Kate will demonstrate creating confetti, and using fabric paints to create a simple ground. Students will start to create a palette of colours based on a picture of their choice.
Small sample pieces will be made to experiment with the effects of colour mixes and possibly the addition of organzas or other materials. Kate will also demonstrate the use of Solvy as a means to hold the confetti in place.
Kate will take time to discuss individual projects and problems that might arise.
In the afternoon, the samples will be stitched by machine or hand to get a feel for how the stitching can modify the colours and shapes.
A bigger piece will be discussed for Day 2.
DAY 2:
Starting with white fabric, students will draw out their landscape and paint it roughly with fabric paints. Whilst it is drying they will continue to create a palette of colours in confetti. If needed, fabric can be painted for this purpose too.
Students will work on their scenes with guidance from Kate, referencing Impressionist artwork and their own photos as needed.
Tulle/Solvy will be added and stitching will be added.
Towards the end of the session, all work will be reviewed and discussed, with consideration on how to take it forward to completion.
