Susan Chapman
welcome to all that is happening around me

I am an artist who works mainly with printed and stitched textiles.
I exhibit and teach both nationally and internationally, also at my home studio, the Granary Studio. I have served as a judge at a number of festivals internationally and am currently in the process of writing a series of three books.
My work is always concerned with all aspects of being human. how people interact with each other and the world around them…
My art is deeply personal and currently related to the people who have gone before me. Old family photos haunt me, they are my only connection to my ancestry. Who are these people looking out of the albums, living their lives.. I need to create a story about each of them. I need to create to enrich my life, it makes my life real, it makes sense of my life. I need to write, to free my mind, to focus me, to go forward then and make the art.
I draw, my sketchbooks are crucial to my practice, and inform all my work.
I always work with some aspect of the figure, mainly large scale, underpainted using paint or dyes then my images drawn, responding to the underpainting, and currently my family photos. I have recently completed two years studying at the Newlyn School of Art, www.newlynartschool.co.uk on ‘defining practice’ and recently completed ‘studio practice’. I am currently considering joining their mentoring program
