This is a two day workshop exploring the delights of pebbles and stones! You will develop line, texture and colour in your pebble forms, through printing, collage and stitch on fabrics and paper. You might want to bring some favourite pebbles along as inspiration.
There will be opportunity to create a pebble stack hanging, a small concertina book and a few 3D fabric
pebbles as well as me to explore other ideas you might have.
We will look at building layers on our various substrates before considering how machine and hand-stitch can further develop our work. Stitch will be used to emphasise or integrate line, colour and form.

Dates, please take careful note

2 days   Tuesday & Wednesday 9th & 10 June 2026 . Each day runs from 10-4 and tea, coffee, and biscuits are available throughout

Payment

the workshop fee is £190. Payment can be made by credit/bank card upon booking.  If you pay via bank transfer then your place will be confirmed once payment has been received.

Stone by Stone Materials list

Acrylic paints will be available in the studio, however bring your own if wished. Try
to bring good student quality paint , System 3 is a good brand. You could also try
textile paints if you have them. You may also like to experiment with a completely
different non stone-like palette, bring additional colours if so.
• Couple of kitchen forks, a sharp non-serrated kitchen knife (+ safety protect on)
chopping surface
• A few pieces of paper to practice on or cheap lining paper, few scraps of fabrics
• Scissors, (Bradawl – optional), baby wipes, kitchen towel, masking tape,
, newspaper, carrier bag for rubbish
• Needlework kit, threads to compliment stone colours + black, white, cream, greens
and browns and yarns if using a different colour-way. Special/fancy yarns to couch
on – if you have any knobbly white or cream yarns, they are great for stitching the
granite lines you find in pebbles. Any plainer white yarns can be teased and knotted
up on the day. I have some spare coloured fancy yarns people can choose from and
I’m sure there will be a few ‘swapsies’ we can arrange between us. You will only
need tiny lengths of anything.
• Sewing machine and threads if machining
• Neutral or white muslin (no more than a metre) foryour pebble stacks. You can also bring other loose
weaves such as linen for hand-stitching. If machining, any plain fabrics will do. Stones look nice
on eco-printed fabrics but don’t bring ones that are‘loud’ enough to compete with your printed pebbles.
• Cotton wadding (about 30 x 50 cms) to back your stone stack. Iron-on interfacing for machining or
puttng behind papers
• At least 5 large/baking potatoes, try and get a few sizes from larger to smaller
(thinking about how stones stack and balance on each other). You could also
include some new potatoes.
• Any papers you wish to try out – old books pages or ledger paper, recycled
packaging can work well. Bring a strip of khadi paper, wallpaper lining paper or
thicker cartridge paper as the base for a concertina book (roughly 15-18 cm tall)
• It would be helpful if the group could provide an iron and ironing pad, extra cutting *in the studio already
mat and ruler/rotary cutter, and a hair dryer.                                                                *in the studio already

don’t forget your lunch as there is no shop in the village
