Drawing with Stitch Description
This two-day workshop block is about stitch as mark-making rather than traditional embroidery. Working in relation to drawing, we will explore the widest range of marks that can be made using stitch, using a variety of textile surfaces and threads.
Starting with the fabric, we will create ‘grounds’ with dye on cloth, creating a surface with colour that you will respond to in the mark-making. Students will be asked to bring a visual reference to work from and we will experiment with these using drawing to identify marks that might be interpreted using stitch, but not making an image as such. Pulling threads, cutting into the surface, collaging, layering and couching will all be looked at as ways of making a diverse range of marks.
Day 1: samples, colour onto cloth, drawing exercise, stitch experiments
Day 2: using the coloured cloth, start to make an interpretation of an image using the stitch techniques explored in day 1. You might make (or begin) one or two pieces that experiment with colour texture and mark-making.
