Textural Tapestry Weaving  Description

This course will build on the sequential weaving (or another tapestry) course ideally you will have some basic skills to get the most from the workshops.

Taking an intuitive and spontaneous approach, the aim for the two days will be to use combinations of material and textural techniques to create woven surface textures.

You will need to bring an image or object to begin working from, using this as a starting point for your weaving. We will begin by making a few exploratory marks on paper, then, working on a large frame, you will build with weft onto a heavy warp using ancient traditional techniques such as soumak,ghiordes knots and wrapping. You will make a series of samples, but these experiments with visual and material processes could be expanded outside the sessions to create pieces at larger scale and with 3D potential.
A variety of fibres and yarns will be available for you to experiment with, but you could also bring materials that interest you, including organic material or strips of torn cloth, for example. During the course there will be a talk/slide show about the techniques on offer with examples of relevant artists and contextual background.

The fee for this workshop is £190, payment can be made by credit/bank card upon booking.  If you pay via bank transfer then your place will be confirmed once payment has been received. There will be a £18 materials charge, payable direct to Rachel

Studio Requirements: I can bring frames for students, including some that can be purchased for around £15. Any yarn available. G-clamps if you have them!paper

Student Requirements: Please bring an image or object as a starting point. This course is aimed at those who have some tapestry weaving experience.
